Assembly Guide

IKEA TARVA Bed Frame

The TARVA bed frame is unfinished solid pine — intended to be stained, painted, or oiled to your taste. The assembly is similar to other IKEA beds, but the raw pine requires extra care to avoid dents during the build. It's heavier than it looks.

Common Challenges

1Unfinished pine dents at a glance

Raw pine shows every scratch, dent, and scuff immediately. Unlike laminated IKEA furniture, there's no protective coating. Handle every piece gently and assemble on a padded surface.

2Barrel nut alignment in raw wood is tricky

The barrel nuts sit in cross-drilled holes in the side rails. In raw pine, these holes sometimes have rough edges or wood dust that prevents the barrel nut from seating fully. Clean out the holes with a pencil before inserting.

3The center support beam sags without proper leg contact

The center support leg must make firm floor contact. On carpet, it can sink in and leave the center beam unsupported, leading to a noticeable dip in the mattress. Use a furniture pad or small plywood square under the foot on soft floors.

4Slats shift if not secured

TARVA slats sit loose in the frame — they're not attached. Movement during sleep gradually shifts them sideways. Use the included slat-holding tape or add your own to keep them in position.

What You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Sandpaper (for finishing after assembly)
  • Level

Tips Before You Start

1

If you plan to stain or paint TARVA, do it BEFORE assembly. It's much easier to stain disassembled panels and you'll get better coverage in the corners.

2

Assemble the bed in its final room — the solid pine frame is heavy and the joints can loosen during transport through doorways.

3

Apply a coat of linseed oil or polyurethane after assembly to protect the raw pine from spills and wear, even if you like the natural look.
