IKEA PAX Wardrobe System
The PAX wardrobe is IKEA's modular closet system — endlessly configurable but also one of the most complex builds in the catalog. The frame is tall, heavy, and floppy until the back panel is attached. Planning and an extra pair of hands are essential.
Common Challenges
1The frame is dangerously floppy until the back goes on
A 236cm PAX frame will wobble dramatically before the back panel is nailed in — it's what gives the structure rigidity. Never let go of an unsupported frame. Have your partner hold it while you nail.
2Multiple frames must be leveled independently
If you're combining two or more PAX units, each frame must be individually leveled with the adjustable feet before you bolt them together. If you bolt first and level later, the frames will twist and doors won't hang straight.
3Door hinges have 3-axis adjustment
PAX door hinges adjust in three directions (up/down, left/right, in/out). Most people only discover two. The third screw — the one that controls depth — is the key to getting doors flush with the frame.
4Interior fittings go in before doors
Install all shelves, drawers, and rails before hanging the doors. Once the doors are on, accessing the interior mounting points is much harder, especially in corner installations.
What You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Drill/driver (highly recommended — many screws)
- Hammer
- Level
- Stud finder
- Step stool or ladder
Tips Before You Start
Assemble each PAX frame flat on the floor, attach the back panel, THEN stand it up. Trying to assemble vertically is a recipe for disaster.
If your PAX has sliding doors, the top and bottom rails must be perfectly parallel. Measure at both ends and the center before drilling.
Wall-mount the PAX even if it feels stable. A loaded 236cm wardrobe is a serious tip-over hazard, especially during earthquakes or if a child hangs on a door.
