IKEA MALM 6-Drawer Dresser
The MALM dresser is one of IKEA's most popular bedroom pieces — and also one of the most important to assemble correctly. After a major recall due to tip-over incidents, wall-anchoring is non-negotiable. The cam-lock and dowel system requires patience to get right.
Common Challenges
1Tip-over risk is real — wall anchor immediately
MALM dressers have been involved in fatal tip-over incidents. IKEA includes a wall-anchoring kit — install it. This is not optional. Don't skip it even if the dresser 'feels stable.'
2Cam locks need exact alignment
The cam lock screws must be inserted to the right depth before the cam disc can grip them. Too shallow and the cam spins freely; too deep and it won't lock. Drive the screw until about 1mm of the head remains above the surface.
3Drawer slides are left/right specific
The drawer runners look similar but have subtle differences for left and right sides. Mixing them up means the drawers won't glide smoothly. Check the 'L' and 'R' stamps on each runner before mounting.
4The bottom panel bows under weight
The bottom of each drawer is thin hardboard. If you load the drawers heavily, the bottom can sag or pop out of its groove. Distribute weight evenly and don't exceed the stated weight limit.
What You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Hammer
- Drill with masonry bit (for wall anchoring)
- Level
- Stud finder
Tips Before You Start
Attach the wall anchor BEFORE loading anything into the drawers. It's much easier to tilt the empty dresser.
Leave the drawers out until the frame is fully assembled — it's lighter and gives you better access to the cam locks on the back.
Tighten all cam locks in sequence (top-to-bottom) rather than one at a time, so the frame stays square as you go.
