IKEA MALM Bed Frame

The MALM bed frame is a clean-lined, no-nonsense design — but it has more parts than most people expect. The side rails, cross-beams, and center support leg all need to be tightened in the right order or the frame will creak and shift over time.

Steps:15
Time:45–60 minutes
People:2 people

Common Challenges

1Side rails must be perfectly level

If one side rail is even slightly higher than the other, the slats will shift and you'll hear creaking every time you move. Use a level across both rails before tightening the bolts fully.

2The center support leg is easy to forget

Many people miss the center support beam and its adjustable leg. Without it, the slats sag in the middle and the bed feels like a hammock. Make sure it's installed and adjusted to touch the floor firmly.

3Barrel nuts are confusing

The barrel nut (the metal cylinder you insert into a hole in the rail) must be oriented so the threaded hole faces the bolt. If it's rotated wrong, the bolt won't catch. Use the Allen key to gently rotate it until you feel the threads engage.

4Headboard bolts loosen over time

The connection between the headboard and side rails takes all the stress when you lean back. Re-tighten these bolts every 6 months or add a thread-locking compound.

What You'll Need

  • Allen key (included, but a ratcheting one is much faster)
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Level

Tips Before You Start

1

Assemble the bed frame in the room where it will live. MALM bed frames usually don't fit through doorways once assembled.

2

Place all slats before putting the mattress on — it's tempting to test-lie, but uneven slat spacing causes long-term sagging.

3

Tighten bolts in an X-pattern (like a car wheel) to distribute pressure evenly across the frame.
