IKEA LACK Side Table
The LACK side table looks like the simplest IKEA build — just four legs and a top. But its simplicity hides a common mistake: the legs strip out incredibly easily if overtightened. Here's how to assemble it without destroying the threads.
Common Challenges
1Legs strip out if overtightened
The legs screw into a plastic fitting embedded in honeycomb cardboard. There's almost no material holding the threads. Tighten until snug and STOP — one extra turn and the fitting spins freely inside the leg.
2The top is hollow, not solid
LACK's tabletop is a honeycomb cardboard core wrapped in a veneer shell. It cannot hold heavy loads and will dent if you press hard on the center. Never stand on a LACK table.
3Legs aren't always perfectly flush
Because the plastic fittings have some play, legs can end up slightly angled. Wobble is common. Place the table on a flat surface and adjust which legs are tighter/looser until it sits flat.
What You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver (that's it)
Tips Before You Start
Hand-tighten only. A drill will strip the fittings instantly.
If a leg feels loose and won't tighten, wrap the screw thread with a tiny piece of cling wrap or Teflon tape for a tighter grip.
Place felt pads under all four legs — it compensates for minor unevenness and protects your floor.
