IKEA KALLAX Shelf Unit
The KALLAX shelf unit is deceptively simple — it's just cubes, right? But the dividers are directional, the unit is extremely heavy once assembled, and getting it square requires more attention than you'd expect. Here's what you need to know before you start.
Common Challenges
1Dividers look symmetrical but aren't
The divider panels have dowel holes on specific sides. If you insert one backwards, the dowels won't align and the panel will sit crooked. Always check which side has the pre-drilled holes before inserting.
2The unit is extremely heavy when assembled
A 4x4 KALLAX weighs about 35kg (77 lbs) fully assembled. Position it exactly where you want it BEFORE you finish assembly — moving it afterward risks damaging the dowel joints.
3Getting the unit square is critical
If your KALLAX isn't perfectly square before you tighten the last panels, it will lean. Measure diagonals corner-to-corner — they should be equal. Adjust before driving in the final screws.
4Wooden dowels split the panel if forced
The pre-drilled holes are tight by design. If a dowel doesn't slide in, don't hammer it — you'll split the particleboard. Gently wiggle it in or lightly sand the dowel tip.

Tips Before You Start
Assemble flat on the floor, then tilt up. Trying to build it upright leads to misaligned panels.
For the 4x4 or 5x5 models, you absolutely need two people for the final stand-up. One person cannot safely lift and stabilize it.
If using KALLAX as a room divider, add the wall-mounting bracket anyway — it prevents a dangerous tip-over if someone leans on it or a child climbs it.
