Assembly Guide

IKEA IVAR Shelving System

IVAR is IKEA's infinitely expandable solid pine shelving system. It's been in the catalog since 1968 and is beloved for its simplicity and modularity. The assembly is pin-and-rail based — no screws for the shelves — which makes it easy but requires precision for stability.

Steps:8
Time:30–45 minutes per section
People:2 people for tall sections

Common Challenges

1The uprights must be exactly parallel

IVAR shelves sit on small pegs that slip into pre-drilled holes in the uprights. If the uprights aren't parallel and equidistant at every shelf level, shelves will rock or not seat at all. Use the cross-brace to set the distance before loading shelves.

2Shelves are not attached — they just sit there

IVAR shelves rest on pins by gravity alone. A hard bump can knock a shelf off its pins, dumping everything on the floor. For earthquake zones or high-traffic areas, consider adding the optional shelf clips.

3Raw pine warps in humid environments

IVAR is unfinished pine, and pine loves to absorb moisture and warp. In basements, garages, or humid climates, treat the wood with a sealant before assembly or accept that some bowing is inevitable.

4Multi-section setups need wall anchoring

The taller IVAR gets, the more it wants to fall forward when loaded. Wall-anchor every section, and anchor adjacent sections to each other using the included hardware.

What You'll Need

  • Hammer
  • Level
  • Rubber mallet (for seating cross-braces)
  • Measuring tape

Tips Before You Start

1

Set up the two uprights and cross-brace on a flat floor first. Once that skeleton is square and level, drop in the shelves from the bottom up.

2

If using IVAR in a garage or laundry room, apply two coats of polyurethane to every piece. Raw pine in humid environments develops mold and warps within months.

3

IVAR is designed to be combined with other IVAR sections over time. Leave room for expansion — once you start, you'll want more.
