Assembly Guide

IKEA HEMNES 8-Drawer Dresser

The HEMNES dresser is a step up from MALM in both weight and complexity. The solid pine construction makes it heavier but more durable. The drawer assembly is the most time-consuming part — eight drawers with runners, bottoms, and fronts to align.

Common Challenges

1Eight drawers means sixteen runners to align

Every runner must be at exactly the same height on both sides, or the drawer will bind and stick. Use a combination square or a scrap piece of wood as a spacer to set consistent heights.

2The solid pine is heavy but soft

Unlike particleboard furniture, HEMNES uses real pine — which dents and scratches easily during assembly. Keep panels on the cardboard packaging while you work, and avoid dragging panels across each other.

3Drawer front alignment is fiddly

The drawer fronts on HEMNES attach separately from the drawer boxes. Getting them perfectly even with consistent gaps takes time. Attach loosely first, align all fronts visually, then tighten fully.

4Cam locks are hidden behind stickers

Some cam lock access holes are covered by small adhesive caps. People miss them and try to force the joint without properly locking the cam. Peel off all the little round stickers first.

What You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Drill (for wall anchor)
  • Level
  • Combination square

Tips Before You Start

1

Number each drawer as you build it (masking tape on the back) — they're not perfectly interchangeable due to wood variation.

2

The back panel on HEMNES is thicker and sturdier than MALM's, but still needs to be nailed in sequence around the perimeter for squareness.

3

Wall-anchor immediately. HEMNES loaded with clothing is extremely top-heavy.
