Assembly Guide

IKEA BILLY Bookcase

The BILLY bookcase is IKEA's best-selling product of all time, with one sold every five seconds worldwide. Despite its popularity, the assembly has a few tricky moments — especially the back panel and shelf pin alignment — that catch first-timers off guard.

Steps:10
Time:30–45 minutes
People:1 person

Common Challenges

1The back panel is thin fiberboard

It's only 3mm thick and splits easily. Nail it in gently with light taps — never hammer hard. Start from one corner and work diagonally to keep it square.

2The bookcase racks if the back panel isn't flush

The back panel is what gives BILLY its rigidity. If it's not perfectly aligned with the edges, the whole unit will wobble. Lay the bookcase face-down on a clean floor and align all edges before nailing.

3Shelf pins fall into the unit

The small metal shelf pins are easy to drop inside the cabinet during assembly. Insert them before standing the bookcase upright, and push them in firmly until they click.

4Cam locks need precise quarter-turns

Over-rotating the cam locks strips them. Turn clockwise exactly until snug — you'll feel a slight resistance. If you go past it, the joint will be loose forever.

What You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Hammer (small, lightweight)
  • Level (optional but recommended)

Tips Before You Start

1

Lay all panels face-down on cardboard to avoid scratching the finish during assembly.

2

If you're placing BILLY on carpet, add furniture pads under the base — it prevents sinking and wobbling.

3

Wall-anchor the bookcase if it's over 3 shelves tall. IKEA includes the hardware but many people skip it — don't.
