IKEA BESTA TV Unit / Storage System
BESTA is IKEA's modular media and living room storage system. It's available in dozens of configurations, which means the assembly steps vary widely. The core challenge is dealing with wall-mounting, combining multiple frames, and getting doors aligned across units.
Common Challenges
1Wall-mounting is complex but critical
BESTA frames are designed to be wall-mounted with the included rail. The rail must be level and anchored into studs or with appropriate wall anchors. A crooked rail means every unit above it will be off.
2Combining frames requires careful alignment
When bolting two BESTA frames together, the fronts must be perfectly flush or doors/drawers across the combined unit will have uneven gaps. Clamp the frames together before driving the connecting bolts.
3Push-open vs. soft-close mechanisms differ
BESTA uses different hardware depending on whether your doors are push-open or soft-close. Mixing them up doesn't just look wrong — the doors won't function. Sort your hardware bags by type before starting.
4Top panels bridge gaps between frames
If you're using a continuous top panel across multiple frames, it will magnify any misalignment. Make sure all frames are the same height and perfectly level before setting the top.
What You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Drill with bits for your wall type
- Level
- Stud finder
- Clamps (for joining frames)
- Measuring tape
Tips Before You Start
Plan your configuration on IKEA's BESTA planner tool BEFORE buying. Returns are a nightmare with this many parts.
If wall-mounting, find your studs first and plan frame widths around them. It's much stronger to anchor directly into studs than to use drywall anchors.
Install the wall rail first, hang the frames empty, THEN add shelves, drawers, and doors. Working with empty frames is dramatically easier.
