IKEA ALEX Drawer Unit

The ALEX drawer unit is a staple of desk setups and craft rooms. The build is straightforward, but the drawer slides need careful alignment, and the unit must be level or drawers will slowly slide open on their own.

Time:45–60 minutes
People:1 person

Common Challenges

1Drawer slides must be at identical heights

Even a 2mm difference between left and right runner heights causes the drawer to jam or sit crooked. Use the pre-drilled holes as guides and double-check with a ruler before driving screws.

2The unit must be level or drawers drift open

ALEX drawers don't have self-closing mechanisms. If the unit tilts forward even slightly, gravity pulls every drawer open. Use adhesive felt shims under the front feet if needed.

3Bottom drawer is heaviest to load — reinforce if needed

The bottom drawer sits closest to the floor and people tend to put the heaviest items there. The particle board bottom can sag over time. Consider adding a thin plywood panel underneath for reinforcement.

4Drop-file drawer rail is fiddly (if included)

Some ALEX models have a drop-file rail for hanging folders. The rail clips are finicky and need to be squeezed hard to snap into place. Don't be afraid to use force — they're designed to click in firmly.

What You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Level
  • Ruler or measuring tape

Tips Before You Start

1

Build the frame first, then install all drawer slides before assembling the drawers themselves. It's easier to see and adjust the slide positions with the frame open.

2

If using two ALEX units as desk supports, place them first and confirm they're level before putting the desktop on.

3

Keep the plastic drawer bumpers that come in the hardware bag — they prevent drawers from being pushed in too far and hitting the back panel.
